Florida Loop Current (Degrees Celsius) - January 25, 2010

A very intense Florida Loop Current can be seen in today's sea surface temperature data as it meanders though the Gulf of Mexico. The Florida Loop Current circulates warm water from the Caribbean Sea through the Gulf and feeds into the Gulf Stream. This feature is one cause of hurricane intensification as storms approach the Gulf of Mexico.
