Tropical Storm Muifa Makes Landfall in North Korea

Tropical Storm Muifa has come ashore in North Korea near the border with China at approximately 1200Z today, August 8, 2011. Although downgraded to a tropical storm, Muifa brings with it a strong storm surge, with waves predicted to reach 6 meters. Evacuations along the coast of China's Shandong province have affected more than 360,000 people. Muifa is the ninth typhoon to hit China this year. Far to the east, out to sea, is Tropical Storm Merbok, expected to enter an area of cooler sea surface temperatures and quickly diminish in strength.
