Irene's Winds and Rain Affect East Coast

Using NOAA's North American Model, run at 1200z on August 27, 2011, the predicted maximum wind speeds and total rainfall are shown from August 27-30th. Hurricane Irene is centered over North Carolina and is expected to move along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard over the next day. Though the storm’s maximum sustained winds will begin to decrease as Irene travels over land, the size of the storm presents dangers to coastal and low-lying areas from storm surge and flooding. The rainfall totals in the image on the right also do not include the precipitation already received over the past few days – which has been substantial in some areas, causing more potential flooding problems.
