The remnants of what was Hurricane Katia, now a tropical storm with winds of 80 mph, are now moving over Ireland and the U.K., as seen here in this image from the NOAA POES satellite taken on September 12, 2011. The AVHRR sensor aboard POES (and the European Metop-A satellite) provide global coverage of weather and environmental conditions as they orbit around Earth from pole to pole. This particular orbit is especially necessary to monitor areas at high latitudes, such as the British Isles and Alaska. |
